Civic body to seize 8,000 properties if owners fail to clear arrears
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will seize around 8,000 properties if their owners do not clear their property tax arrears amounting to Rs 507.67 crore.
Dilip Gawde, the additional commissioner and the chief of the property tax department told media, “The department has prepared a list of 7,967 properties that each have arrears of more than Rs1 lakh. The department had sent them notices directing them to clear their arrears within a fortnight. The notice period has lapsed and we will now be sending them reminder notices. If they still fail to clear the arrears, we will seize their properties”.
The department has sent notices to the owners of 6,384 properties but notices couldn’t be sent to the owners of the remaining 1,583 properties due to court cases or because the properties could not be located, said Gawde. He said the defaulters must pay their tax or else they would have to pay a penalty of 2% per month.
The department has divided the city into 16 divisions. The most number of properties with arrears of more than Rs1 lakh is in ‘municipal corporation bhavan’, amounting to Rs 95.42 crore. The second largest amount of arrears is in the Thergaon division — Rs 53.16 crore. The third largest amount of arrears is in the Chinchwad division, amounting to Rs50.52 crore.
Gawde added that the department had collected Rs 233.36 crore from 2.12 lakh property holders till date. About 53% of the tax collection, amounting to Rs 122.81 crore, was collected online from 1.11 lakh property holders. A total of 23,161 property holders paid their tax, amounting to Rs59.83 crore, through cheques and 77,746 property holders paid a total of Rs 42.09 crore through cash.
