Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a Rs. 3,375-crore order from the Mauritius government-led Metro Express Limited to design and build an Integrated Light Rail-based Urban Transit System in the African island nation. Recently, the company also bagged the Riyadh and the Doha metro projects

“We are delighted that we have been able to carry our credentials as the foremost builders of metro and light rail transport systems in India and the Middle East, to Africa too,” said S.N. Subrahmanyan, CEO and MD, L&T. “The new light rail system will significantly transform the way Mauritius will commute in the future and will also bring in economic benefits along the route,” said Mr. Subrahmanyan.

The 26-km route will connect Curepipe to Immigration Square in Port Louis and will feature 19 stations, two of which will be elevated stations. The project is scheduled to be completed in 48 months.

The project will be fully funded through a Government of India grant and Line of Credit. “This order is perfectly in sync with our strategy to expand L&T’s Railways business into markets beyond India,” said Rajeev Jyoti, CEO, Railways Strategic Business Unit, L&T Construction.
