Pune citizens demand actions against builders & officials supporting illegal construction
A group of eminent citizens has written a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding punitive action against builders and civic officials who encourage and support illegal construction. The group though did not object to regularisation of illegal construction as it felt that the common people should not suffer but insisted that the practice must not become a trend.
The letter signed by D. V. Rao, Satish Khot, Gautam Idnani and Arvind Kaushal said, “This practice of not penalising builders and developers who deliberately break laws with ulterior motives has emboldened them to continue to break the law. This also results in loss of revenue to the state government and the municipal corporations. In our view, this lacuna amounts to unanticipated encouragement to builders and developers to continue to break the laws with impunity and amounts to miss-governance. By now we have a reason to believe that this lapse in not penalising the offenders has emboldened them to continue to take greater and greater liberties to suit their illegal purposes.”
The citizens’ group has requested the chief minister to urgently take stock of the situation and all possible fallouts thereof and act swiftly to penalise the habitually law-breaking builders and developers and set a healthy precedent by actively discouraging probable law breakers, including civic officials.
“We are certain that you do not wish to encourage law breaking by citizens. Therefore, we submit that all who intentionally break laws to gain illegal or unauthorised benefits like selling of unauthorised buildings or illegally occupying government or public property must be punished promptly and effectively, not just nominally,” the letter added.
