Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can soon seek permission to construct their dream house in their home village in Telangana by sitting in their house or office in US or elsewhere abroad.

Panchayat Raj and Rural Development officials are working on a model to offer “online building permissions” in all Telangana villages. “Though the portal was supposed to be launched before Diwali,” officials said it was put off as they were adding more features.

Panchayat Raj deputy Commissioner Rama Rao told TOI that the portal is being developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). “As part of ease of doing business, government wants to be number one in terms of offering services to the people and also in various government activities. It will take some more time to launch the portal,” he said. A team of officials from Telangana had visited Madhya Pradesh to study the e-panchayat model and will implement it here with improvements.

What’s more, NRIs living abroad and people in villages can also pay their property tax online besides applying for online for drinking water supply tap connections.

The Telangana government has decided to extend this online model in 8,640 gram panchayats in the state.Officials said the government is likely to give a new name to the e-panchayat facility and one of the names doing rounds is Palle Seva Kendram.

“The government has already supplied computers and other peripherals to the villages so that Palle Seva kendrams can be set up. Once the fibre grid project is complete, every home will have internet facility in villages.Transparency will improve in giving building permissions,” said an official. The project is likely to provide employment to 10,000 rural men and women.
