The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs has directed a review of Floor Space Index (FSI) in mega cities and urban agglomerations. The idea is to ensure better utilization of scarce urban land resources in the context of rapid urbanization.

The government’s move comes against the backdrop of NITI Aayog’s recommendation for relaxation of FSI norms in urban areas to boost urban development.

The ministry’s statement says that officials will take up a time-bound review of these norms in all 53 cities with a population of one million and above. The review will be in consultation with the states and cities to cover an assessment of the existing norms and to what extent it could be enhanced.
