Zirakpur, where the population has increased from 50,000 to around 2 lakh in less than 10 years, has been facing the issue of illegal constructions especially by the original allottees who have started dividing their empty lands for construction of booths, shops and residential buildings. This is mostly seen in Peer Muchhalla that falls on the border of Panchkula and Zirakpur.

Even the Zirakpur municipal corporation (MC) official on Wednesday stopped an illegal construction but the owner of the plot have started the construction again.

The department is also keeping a regular check on illegal constructions across the city. A special four-member team has been formed to keep a check on such constructions regularly. They also conduct raids in various parts of the city.

An MC official said, “As per rules, no construction can take place without an approved map. Action against the builders or owners who are making changes in the land without approval are subject to face punishment. Besides this, clearing the pending CLU (change of land use), completion certificate and town planning schemes is also necessary.”

However, there are a number of owners who, without obtaining CLUs and approval of maps have started the construction and some of them have finished also, sources said. They also said, the local residents, who own land around 1 kanal, are those who are involved in such constructions.

Meanwhile, there are some illegal colonies too and their list has been uploaded on the Gmada website. The owners of the such colonies have applied for CLU, mapping and other required licence to get the construction functional again.
