At a time when the government is drafting stricter norms for household paint manufacturers to minimize the use of lead, most of the residents are unaware about the presence of the hazardous content in their homes.

Decorative and household paints contain lead as it adds to its commercial value by increasing the vibrancy of colour, increases high degree of corrosion resistance and reduces drying time and also make it economical, paint manufacturers said. But on the flip side, it has harmful effects on humans. It can block mental growth of children and causes hypertension.

Experts said that in the absence of regular monitoring on paint industries, several manufacturers use significantly higher amount of lead in paints.

“Use of lead free paints is not in trend as people are not much aware about this. But, in future we will use ecofriendly paints in new constructions because with the rising awareness, its demand will also increase,” said Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI), Indore chapter president Vijay Gandhi.
