Sources in the AMC claim that last April they came under tremendous pressure to put into cold storage housing schemes for the “economically weaker sections” (EWS) planned in a few posh areas in Thaltej,Gota, Makarba and Sola areas.

In 2016, the AMC advertised that it would build 6,349 EWS houses in these localities as part of Phase IV of the state government’s EWS housing scheme. When these units were being allotted, only 2,805 went to beneficiaries.

Some 3,241 houses were to come up in Sola, Thaltej and Gota areas, most of them in town planning schemes 31, 32, 40, 41 and 42. “Most of these EWS schemes were to come up next to bungalow schemes and upcoming 2BHK and 3BHK schemes and have been put in cold storage until further decisions are taken,” says the AMC official.

“Though we promised so6,500 houses in Phase IV, we could build only 2,805. We have a scheme coming up in Bodakdev, two in Gota and two in Makarba,” Bipin Patel, chairman of the housing improvement committee
